Bitch is going to be at Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest this weekend, covering some fantastic female and queer-fronted bands playing on Auditorium Shores.
There's a large amount of great electronic pop, from bigger indie acts like (Lykke Li, Blonde Redhead, YACHT) and some lesser-known but promising artists (MNDR, Grimes, Keep Shelley in Athens), in addition to some great rock (Lemuria, The Thermals, Thee Oh Sees), dreamy pop (Girls, tUnE-yArDs, Asobi Seksu) and a few cult favorites (Boris, Big Freedia). Here's just a sampling of some of the acts this weekend you should check out, and for folks following along at home, here's hoping you find a new band to love and check out when they're near you!
1. MNDR – Cut Me Out
Amanda Warner and Peter Wade make fun, dance pop, and in that genre of electronic music where lower-case letters and vowels are left at the door. 11/6: Blue stage, 3:35
2. Le Butcherettes – New York
Mexico's Le Butcherettes makes fierce rock out of their pared-down line up. Frontwoman Teri Gender Bender definitely brings it with their live shows! 11/6: Orange stage, 1:20
3. Grimes – Oblivion
Grimes is Claire Boucher, a Montreal electronic musician who came into the field pretty late in life, which makes her haunting, but fun songs all the more impressive. 11/6: Blue stage, 3:00
4. tUnE-yArDs – My Country
The opening track off Merrill Garbus' latest album, Bizness, "My Country" seems like a fitting song for our current activist spirit sweeping the country. 11/5: Blue stage, 4:00
5. Lemuria – Chautauqua Country
This lo-fi trio from Buffalo has a personal, pop-punk sound that feels like going to basement shows in high school. 11/6: Orange stage, 12:45.
6. Austra – Spellwork (Baron Von Luxxury Space Cathedral Remix)
This remix sends Austra's already disco electronica farther out to outer space. 11/6: Blue stage, 4:20
7. Big Freedia – Let It Go Nah
New Orleans' Big Freedia (The Queen Diva) has her first full-length album out now, so you can bring the bounce home with you! 11/4: Blue stage, 6:05
8. Boris – Spoon
You'll find Japanese experimental trio Boris heading up the unofficial "metal" stage at at FFF—their guitarist Wata seems like a total badass. 11/6: Grey stage, 7:00
9. Thee Oh Sees – Dead Energy
Garage-punk group Thee Oh Sees can make you feel grungy, goofy, and darn-right good, mostly due to John Dwyer's and Brigid Dawson's vocals over fuzzy guitars. 11/4: Grey stage, 5:45
10. The Joy Formidable – The Greatest Light is the Great
This UK rock band, fronted by Ritzy Bryan, isn't your average rock band. This track is an understated kind of epic, like most of their latest album, The Big Roar. 11/5: Orange stage, 3:15
11. YACHT – Psychic City (Voodoo City)
Producer Jona Bechtolt and science writer Claire Evans are the perfect pair to make music that combines pop, art, and spirituality. 11/4: Blue stage, 4:15
12. Heartless Bastards – Sway
The alt-country band is fronted by Erika Wennerstrom, and this track is a bit more upbeat than her other bluesy ballads. 11/4: Orange stage, 3:55
